This song is a beautiful fusion of classical suitar with the beautiful strumming of acoustic guitar and a spray of electric guitar here and there. It’s a very short song which has been sung superbly by KK. I love his voice! Strumming pattern is very similar to the one used in Aye Khuda.
If you want to avoide barre chords, you can use a capoe on the 4th fret and play simple open chords. It is given below.

Pehli Nazar Mein, RaceI had been getting a lot of request to post the chords of Pehli Nazar Mein from the movie Race. The only reason why I had not posted it yet was because I didn’t have the time to do it. I like to hear this song more than playing it on guitar but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth playing. The good thing about Atif Aslam songs are that they are usually based on open chords and so are easier for newbies. But this song has one barre chord as well. So here goes…
The strumming pattern of this song can be done in two ways: One is the traditional Papa Kehte Hai style but I don’t think it would appeal to many. So the alternative is:

which sounds more like original.
The basic chord pattern of this song according to me is
A – E – F#m – E
upon which the whole song seems to be developed.

This is a good song for beginners to learn and practice barre chords. I am not at all in awe of this song. I don’t like it much but since it is based on acoustic guitar completely, I thought to post it here.

The song uses barre chords and is in the key of Gm. If you know barre chords, this song it would be very easy to play. If you don’t know barre chords, you will have to use a capo on the 3rd fret to turn the chords into simple basic open chords.

The Dominant 7th Chords – sounds very heavy, isn’t it? Do not worry, it is not.

Dominant 7th chords are just some simple modifications of their parent chords. It is very easy to play with little practice.

There is a lot of confusion amongst guitarists with these chords. This is because of the multiple ways to denote these chords. Often the word ‘dominant’ is skipped so that the chords are called just 7th. Unless otherwise specified, when a guitarists talks of 7th chords, you can be sure they mean the Dominant 7th Chords.

How are Dominant 7th Chords formed?

A Dominant 7th Chord is very easy to form. In simple words, you just have to add the flatted 7th note to the major scale of parent chord.

Didn’t understand it?

Ok, let’s take an example. Consider the C major chord. Any major chord is formed by combining the root note, the third note and the fifth note. So the dominant 7th chord of C major (denoted as C7) will be a combination of the root note, the third note, the fifth note and the flatted 7th note (see below).

The C major scale is:
C D E F G A B
1 – 3 – 5 – b7

So, C7 = C E G Bb

Now look at the C7 chord below. Focus on the third fret of the third string. That is the Bb note. That is the note added to the regular C major chord.

Let’s take another example.

Consider the G7 chord. First we will write the scale of the G major chord. Then find all the relevant notes.

The G major scale is:
G A B C D E F#
1 – 3 – 5 – b7

So, G7 = G B D F

Now look at the G7 chord below. The first fret on the first string is the F note which is added to the regular G chord.

Isn’t it easy now?! Figure out the rest of the chords below yourself.

Where are the Dominant 7th Chords played?

Dominant 7th chords are mostly found in jazz and blues song. They bring a dissonance sound to the music. Hence they often lead strongly to another chord, especially the root note chord.

So, you are able to play the Basic Open Chords very well. Not just the easy ones like D, E or C chord but even the tougher ones like G and F chord too.

But what about moving from one chord to another? Suddenly you stop your right hand, focus on the left hand, place the fingers on the required frets and before you can strum your newly formed chord, the rhythm has already gone for a toss!

Frustrating, isn’t it?

To play songs nicely, you not only need to be able to play the chords but also change them effectively without breaking the strumming action and the flow of the right hand. This can seem to be quite difficult initially. But as with many things related to guitar, regular practice does wonders.

I remember how frustrating it was to play the chords but not able to quickly change to another. But I can’t remember when I actually got comfortable doing it. I just kept at it, playing the chords and trying to change from one to another until it so happened that the brain recognized the finger shapes that were required for various chords and transferred the whole process into the subconscious mind.

The bottom-line is: PRACTICE. If you give up on the way, playing the guitar would always be a distant dream. But if you persist and perspire, you are sure to witness miracles! (Aww.. that was poetic!)

Let me give you some tips which will ensure you are on the right path and speed up the learning process.

1. Improve Finger Dexterity

It is crucial that your left hand remains loose and free instead of hard and stiff whatever the chord position be. A loose hand will be more adaptable than a stiff one.

2. Correct Hand Position

The left thumb should be supporting the back of the guitar neck instead of rising over the top of the guitar reaching the strings. This helps in stretching your fingers for the Open G and F chords and the critical barre chords.

3. Try all Permutations and Combinations

Make sure you are trying all possible combinations of changing the open chords. Start with the easy ones like D to G chord or Emin to C chord. When you are comfortable with these, move on to tougher ones like A to G chord or the ultimate one: G to F chord!

4. Right Way to Practice

This is the way you should go about practicing it: Play a chord four times a bar, then change to another chord and play it four times a bar again, then come back to the previous chord. Do this till you are so comfortable that you can change the chords without seeing your left hand! Of course, it will take time, so be patient.

5. Avoid Barre Chords at the Start

When you are starting out, don’t try to change to barre chords or back. That would be a big demotivator! First get used to the basic open chords, then go ahead with the barre chords.

6. Practice, Practice and More Practice!

All the tips above are useless if you don’t practice enough. By enough, I don’t mean 5 hours non-stop, hell no! 30-60 minutes a day is more than sufficient. Just keep yourself motivated by whatever inspires you and keep at it. You will get there in the end.

This short lesson is completely dedicated to the concept of Root Note. It is very important to understand this concept as it will help you in learning the intermediate guitar techniques including power chords and barre chords.

What is Root Note?

Root Notes on the Guitar Neck

Root Note is nothing but a bass sound which forms the chord. Since it is a bass sound, naturally it will be either on the sixth string or the fifth string.

The image on the left shows some of the root notes. The leftmost line represents the thickest (lowest pitch) string while the rightmost line represents the thinnest (highest pitch) string.

Each chord has a root note. It is the root chord which gives the chord its name.

For e.g. to play the G chord, the note on the third fret in the sixth string will be included. It is this note that gives the chord a distinct sound which is uniquely recognizable. How the power and barre chord are formed from the root note will be covered in the next lesson.

For now, just remember the various root notes and its locations on the neck.

Another thing to notice is that all the notes can be reached by just sliding the left hand up and down the neck of the guitar. Thus if you know the root notes, you can go from one chord to another just by moving along the guitar neck without changing the shape. So, you no longer have to remember lots of shapes for different chords.

Root Notes don’t apply to Basic Open Chords, or in other words, chords with open strings.

This is just a concept which you need to remember for now. It will be useful when we will try to understand power chords and later on, the swiss-army knife of guitar, the barre chords.

Things to remember:

  • Each chord has a root note which gives the chord its name.
  • Root notes are found on the fifth and sixth string of the guitar.
  • Chords having open strings are not built upon root notes.
  • Root notes are the basic concept upon which power chords and barre chords are built.

Ok, so you have been through it innumerable times. Right from childhood you thought of mastering that wonderful instrument. You always dreamt of playing it and impressing your friends.

But…

There comes a long list of excuses, ahem ahem… reasons why you didn’t do it.

Stop giving excuses, will you?

Probably, you have crossed 30… or 40… or even more. How long will you wait? How long will you keep thinking, “Gosh! Let me get some free time, then I will definetely start learning guitar. I am sure next month there won’t be so much work!”

That time would never come. Whatever free time you have, you have it right now. You can choose to either learn something or just continue ranting about how hectic your life is.

Now let me give you 7 reasons why you should consider learning guitar.

7. It’s an Art

Yes, it is a beautiful art. And it is a wonderful instrument. It helps you to develop your romantic understanding of rationality. Praticing any art does that. Learning guitar is one of the easier ways to do it.

6. Have a boy/girl friend? Impress them!

Guitar, as a musical instrument, has always carried a glam-quotient which other instruments don’t even come close to… barring the drums, I guess. It is always considered very stylish and cool to be able to play the guitar, whatever your age! Not just your partner, it feels great to play it amongst your group of friends.

Once when I was traveling by train, one of the co-passengers, an aunty, sang the song Luka Chuppi, while I played my guitar alongside. It still cheers me up to think of that memory… and the pat on the back!

5. A Hobby to be proud of!

Playing guitar can be a good addition to your extra-curricular activities. A good hobby to develop and present rather than stamp-collection and coin-collection!

In my technical interview of Tech Mahindra, I was asked about my hobbies (obviously!). When I told them I played guitar, the next 4-5 questions where on guitar itself. It turned out that my interviewer was a guitar enthusiast himself! The whole interview transformed into a pleasant chat and an exchange of knowledge.

4. Don’t just Listen to Music, Play it!

Most of my friends are music lovers. They have a very good ear and appreciate good music. But why stop there? Why not learn to play the music which you love listening to? Believe me, the feeling of being able to produce a tune is way more amazing than to just hear it through your i-pod. You got to feel it, to appreciate it.

For me, it was the most important motivation to finally pick up the guitar and start playing.

3. Give an Outlet to your locked-up Emotions

Are you an introvert person? Do you tend to keep your emotions to yourself rather than flood it over some poor soul?! Then you got to learn the guitar, or for that matter any instrument. It’s an excellent way to express your feelings and emotions.

Feeling sad? Play a slow, monotonous tune. Feeling rebellious? Get on to some hard hitting chords! Feeling cheerful? Create your own tune! The feeling of not being understood will cease to exist. Your friends will know your mood just by listening to your guitar!

2. A Companion for Solitude

Are you alone at home with nothing to do? Pick up the guitar and play some of your favorite tunes. Not only have you spent your time in a worthwile manner, you have also got yourself a bit of practice under your belt! Can there be a better way of spending your free time?

1. It’s Pure Bliss… Playing the Guitar

When I finally decided to start learning the guitar (during my first year of Engg.), I did not aim to be part of a rock band some day, or to become a musician. I wanted to learn it for myself (yes, I was being selfish!). I wanted to play the guitar just for the sake of playing. No purpose. No motive. Just being able to play it gave me lots of motivation, peace and serenity. You don’t have to be a great player to derive pleasure from playing the guitar.

If you have no other reason or motivation to learn guitar, I would suggest you to go ahead and learn it… just to experience the bliss that comes from being able to play it. You would never regret it.

Suspended Chords

Suspended chords are those which you should know in addition to the major and minor chords. People often tend to feel mystified with these chords thinking they are tough. On the contrary, they are very simple to play and beautifully ornament the major/minor chords associated with them. I will tell you how.

First, it is important to get into a few basics of chords. If your theories of chords are up your sleeve, then you will remember that basic chords (triads) are made up of 3 notes. The root note, the third and the fifth note. If we take the example of C major chord:

The scale of C major chord is:
C D E F G A B C
1 – 3 – 5 – - -

Here, the root note is C, the third note is E and the fifth note is G. Hence for C major = C E G.

Similarly, for minor chords, we just have to lower the third note by half a step. So instead of E, we will have Eb. Hence for C minor = C Eb G.

Remember: It is the third degree (note) which determines whether the chord is major or minor.

So, if we remove the 3rd degree/note, the chord will be neither major nor minor. So what will it be? It will be somewhere in between… in other words, suspended. That’s the concept of suspended chords.

Suspended Chords are neither happy (major) nor sad (minor). They are just hanging around coolly!

Well, things don’t end here… You will find varieties with suspended chords. You must have come across it… Dsus2, Dsus4 etc… You get these variations by replacing the third note with the second note for sus2 chords and with 4th note for sus4 chords. As simple as that.

How to Practice Suspended Chords

You can either directly play the suspended chords and appreciate their sound. Or else, you can play them along with their parent chords (major and minor).

For example, you can play like this D, Dsus4, D, Dsus2 over and over. This is the most common way of playing suspended chords. Once you get the hang of it, you can also try Dmin, Dsus2, Dmin, Dsus4 and so on.

How are Suspended Chords Used In Music

You will find suspended chords used directly in between chords, but the more common way is to ornament the parent chord. So, if you have to play a particular chord for longer than a bar or more, put in suspended chords in between to make it sound beautiful. That way, you can improvise the rhythms itself.

While learning the guitar and the notes, and chords, some students find it difficult to actually play the chords of a song in a basic strumming pattern. To some it comes naturally, but for others it requires a lot of practice. I had to go through major patience levels to grasp chord positions, but I got through with the strumming barrier quite naturally.

So this post here is not for the naturally gifted strummers, but for people who find problems in the DOWN / UP movement of strumming.

There are few points to remember.

  • While learning strumming, you have to be conscious of your hand movement to match the counts etc. here you will find your hand moving more like a mechanical robot. But the art of strumming begins with having your right hand low down and up in a smooth natural movement.
  • Strumming is an art based on a simple DOWN-UP movement of your hand. So your hand should always move down and up, and based on the pattern that you are playing you either choose to HIT or MISS the strings while going down or HIT or MISS it while coming up. This is very important as many people tend to overlook it.
  • First divide the basic counts into a pattern like this: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
  • Move your hand down on ONE and UP on the AND (&) and keep this going on continuously.
  • Wherever in the examples there is an X mark, you DO NOT stop your hand movement, but you simply DON’T play on that X.
For example some basic strumming patterns to Practice are as follows:

Example 1:
Hitting all the counts:

1–&–2–&–3–&–4–& | 1–&–2–&–3–&–4–& |
D–U–D–U–D–U–D–U | D–U–D–U–D–U–D–U |

Example 2:
Hitting on 1-2&3-4&

This pattern if played at a moderate speed can be used for Papa Kehte Hain type of songs:

Hitting on 1&-&-&4&

All these strumming patterns are OPEN PATTERNS where you can let EACH OF YOUR BANG to RING…There are quite a few complicated ones as well, some of which require you to MUTE

the strings after you BANG on it ONCE. Some which require you to HIT the strings hard with your right hand, but completely MUTED by your LEFT hand.

For example, the BOSSANOVA pattern, if you remember George Michael’s Faith, or Allah Ke Bandhe the pattern doesn’t let the strings RING. Nazre Milana from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is another example of muted strumming. Basically the sound shouldn’t be CHANNNNGGGGGG it should rather be CHANK!

This should help you get started with strumming… if you are not a natural....!!!

Why is it that you simply love listening to a particular person’s guitar playing while just acknowledging another person though they may be equally experienced? What sets them apart?

Apart from being a genius, there are few basic skills which can be mastered to notch up your guitaring skills. I see beginners avoiding these easy effects thinking it is very difficult to master it which is actually not the case. Wet your hands in it and you will realize how easy and rewarding it can be.

The Hammer-On Effect

This is how you will see it in notations: 5h6, 2h4

Hammer-On effect sounds very pleasing when done correctly. Considering the above example, keep your index finger on the 5th fret of any string and play it once. Then instead of playing the 6th fret normally, hit your middle finger on the 6th fret hard enough so that it sounds distinctly from the 5th fret. Do not let the finger up! There you go, you just did a Hammer-On. You can use your other fingers to hammer other frets as well. But they have to be on the same string for best sound.

Wasn’t that easy? As you might have already deduced, the first number has to be smaller than the second one in the notation. If it isn’t then you can be sure its…

The Pull-Off Effect

Here’s how its represented: 7p5, 4p1

This is just the reverse of what you did earlier and equally easy to execute. In this case you have to ensure that your fingers are in position before you do a pull-off.

Lets take the above example. Ensure one of your fingers is on the 5th fret and the corresponding finger is on the 7th fret of the same string. Play the note and immediately pull-off the finger resting on the 7th fret so that the 5th fret note is heard. It’s not at all difficult if you practice a bit. Soon it will be as easy as playing normal notes.

Combining Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs

The above two effects can be combined for even better sounding effects. Combined effects are notated this way: 3h5p3, 6p5h6

Looks complicated? But it is very easy to play. First play the 3h5 part as explained above. Once you have hammered on the 5th fret, quickly pull-off your finger to play second effect 5p3. This is usually done fast so that it does not take more than a single delay. In mathematical notation:

3h5p3 = 3h5 + 5p3

Similarly,

6p5h6 = 6p5 + 5h6

Pretty easy, huh?

The Bend Effect

This is the hallmark of an electric guitar but you can still practice it on your acoustic one albeit in a limited way. As the name suggest, you bend the strings upwards so that a layman watching you might think you are frustrated with your guitar.

Bending is represented thus: 8b10r8

‘b’ represents bend and ‘r’ represents the release of the bend. You press hard on the 8th fret and bend the strings upward to match with the 10th fret pitch and then release it to get back to the 8th fret pitch. It will require more practice than the previous effects.

To support the bend, you should use your other fingers on the 6th and 7th fret as well. Also, the bend should not be from bottom to top, it should be angular. What I mean is your fingers should be approximately 45 degrees with the fretboard. This ensures you use your pam muscles instead of finger muscles which can be painful.

The Sliding Effect

Sliding in another technique unique to stringed instruments. It is represented using a ‘/’ or ‘\’. Here is an example: 3/8, 6\4

Sliding is easy to do and sounds very cool. Hold any finger on the 3rd fret of any string and slide it over the string up to the 8th fret without losing contact with the string. Moving from lower to higher fret is forward slide and the reverse is called reverse slide. This is the easiest technique of all.

The Vibrato Effect

Vibrato is represented in notations like this: ~~ or v

You keep a finger on a particular fret and move your finger sideways parallel to the guitar neck in a to and fro motion to produce the vibrato effect. It is important to trust your ears rather than notations to use the vibrato effect. Many celebrated guitarist have a signature vibrato unique to them which set them apart. So learn it, practice it and imbibe it in your guitar playing to dazzle the listeners!

Muting

Muting is represented by a simple x. It means you do not have to play that fret or hold the string lightly enough to mute it. The strumming of Dil Ko from RHTDM uses muting to a nice effect.

That’s all the basic effects every guitarist must know. Always try to recognize these effects in various songs and music. Playing solos without them is insulting the piece itself!
