guitar lessons with guitar tab - intermediate trick 3Medium Trick 3

guitar lessons with guitar tab - intermediate trick 3Medium Trick 3
So why not just mix notes from the two scales together? Here is one way to do
that. The first note (G string 5th fret) is from the standard scale, and the
rest are from the major pentatonic. You can often use notes from one scale as
"grace notes" for the other scale, like in this example.

KEY=A Major

E |---5---------------------------|----------------------------------|
B |---5-------------5---7---5-----|----------------------------------|
G |---6-----5-h-6---------------6-|-5---4---2---4---2-------2--------|
D |---7---------------------------|---------------------4------------|
A |---7---------------------------|----------------------------------|
E |---5---------------------------|----------------------------------|

Here is your first trick based on the "major pentatonic scale." That might sound
complicated, but it really isn't. Just move the scale we've been working with
down three frets to the 2nd fret and play it there. In fact, this is a standard
trick from the 5th fret that I just moved down to the second. You can play it in
both places. I put the A chord in front so your ear will remember that we are
still playing in the key of A.

KEY=A Major

E |---5--------------2------------|----------------------------------|
B |---5----------2-------5----2---|----------------------------------|
G |---6-----4b--------------------|--4---2---4b/\---2----------------|
D |---7---------------------------|----------------------------------|
A |---7---------------------------|----------------------------------|
E |---5---------------------------|----------------------------------|

This is a tough trick. It sounds simple, but the finger spread is wide and it
isn't easy to bend three notes right next to each other like this. If you can
play this you are good.

E |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
G |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
D |---------7---------7---------7-|----------------------------------|
A |---3b/-------4b/-------5b/-----|----------------------------------|
E |-------------------------------|--5\------------------------------|

Here's another two note chord. It is a standard blues "turnaround." A turnaround
is that thing you play at the end of a blues pattern just before you start the
whole thing over again. It sounds even better in the key of E (4th fret, 3rd
fret, 2nd fret, open).

E |------9---------8---------7----|--5-------------------------------|
B |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
G |----9---9-----8---8-----7---7--|--5-------------------------------|
D |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
E |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|

[Several people have written in to say that this turnaround should be played
like so]

E |------9---------8---------7----|---------5------------------------|
B |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
G |----9---9-----8---8-----7---7--|--5-h-6---------------------------|
D |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
E |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|

This isn't really hard to do. Just play two notes instead of one. Two note
chords can be made out of any two notes in the scale. Some will sound better
together than others. Try this one and then create your own.

E |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
B |----------8----8----6----5-----|----------------------------------|
G |----/9----9----7----7----5-----|----------------------------------|
D |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
E |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|

This is an old trick that I picked up when I was fourteen. For a long while I
didn't play it because of its 70s roots. Lately people have really responded to
it. I play it all the time now. Go figure. Make sure you pick upward on the B
string and downward on the G string so you can develop some speed.

E |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
B |-----8----10-p-8----10-p-8-----|10-p-8---10-9-8---10-p-8---10b/\--|
G |--/9---9---------9---------9---|-------9--------9--------9--------
D |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
E |-------------------------------|----------------------------------|
